Shloka

न जायते नो म्रियते न वर्धते
न क्षीयते नो विकरोति नित्यः ।
विलीयमानेऽपि वपुष्यमुष्मि -
न्न लीयते कुम्भ इवाम्बरं स्वयम् ॥ १३६ ॥

na jāyate no mriyate na vardhate
na kṣīyate no vikaroti nityaḥ ;
vilīyamāne’pi vapuṣyamuṣmi -
nna līyate kumbha ivāmbaraṃ svayam . 136 .

Anvaya

न जायतेna jāyate
It is not born
न म्रियतेna mriyate
does not die
न वर्धतेna vardhate
does not grow
न क्षीयतेna kṣīyate
does not decay
न विकरोतिna vikaroti
does not cause change
नित्यःnityaḥ
eternal
अमुष्मिन् वपुषिamuṣmin vapuṣi
even while this body
विलीयमाने अपिvilīyamāne api
gets resolved
न लीयतेna līyate
does not die
अम्बरं–इवambaraṃ–iva
like the space (which does not get affected)
स्वयम्svayam
by itself
कुम्भेkumbhe
in the pot (when it breaks)

Translation

The Atman is not born, does not die, does not grow, does not decay, does not cause change and it is eternal. It does not die even while the body gets resolved (dies). It is unaffected like the space when the pot breaks.

Annotation

1) The six changes which all objects undergo are described by Yaska. Atman does not have such changes. 2) As it has no origin it has no subsequent modifications. 3) The pot space is not affected when the pot breaks (Jagadguru).
