यदासीद्विलासाद्विकारं जगद्य-
द्विकराश्रयं नाद्वितीयत्वतः स्यात् ।
मनोबुद्धिचित्ताहमाकारवृत्ति-
प्रवृत्तिर्यतः स्यात्तदेवाहमस्मि ॥८॥
yadāsīdvilāsādvikāraṃ jagadya-
dvikarāśrayaṃ nādvitīyatvataḥ syāt ;
manobuddhicittāhamākāravṛtti-
pravṛttiryataḥ syāttadevāhamasmi .8.
English Translation
That which spreading out became the modification known as the universe and yet, because of its secondless nature, was not the locus of any modification and that from which proceed the states taking the forms of mind (the cogitating faculty), intellect (the determining faculty), the sub-conscious (state of impressions) and the ego (the assertive principle) - even that am I.

Though the Self is the substratum supporting the conception of the universe and though the universe is therefore only a form of the Self, just as the rope is the substratum of and appears as the snake, the Self, just like the rope, does not undergo at all any change in itself. Similarly, though in the presence of the Self and with its energy, our Antahkarana, the Inner Faculty, functions in several ways, the Self remains ever the same quite unaffected by those functions, just as a magnet though responsible for the movements of a piece of iron does not itself move.
