निदानं यदज्ञानकार्यस्य कार्यं
विना यस्य सत्त्वं स्वतो नैव भाति ।
यदाद्यन्तमध्यान्तरालान्तराल-
प्रकाशात्मकं स्यात्तदेवाहमस्मि ॥६॥

nidānaṃ yadajñānakāryasya kāryaṃ
vinā yasya sattvaṃ svato naiva bhāti ;
yadādyantamadhyāntarālāntarāla-
prakāśātmakaṃ syāttadevāhamasmi .6.

English Translation

That which is the substratum of the effects of ignorance, that whose existence is not apparent at all except through its effects and that which is of the nature of light illuminating the beginning, the end, the middle, the interspaces and what is between them, even that am I.

Though ignorance may screen a thing, it cannot obliviate it altogether. If the non-perception of the rope is absolute, there can be no snake-perception; the “ropeness” alone must be oblitrated retaining intact the “this-ness” whereupon the snake can be superimposed. Thus it is really the rope that is primarily responsible for the appearance of the snake by reason of the partial ignorance of its true nature. Similarly it is the Self itself which forms the basis of the universe appearing thereon. The Self by reason of its all-pervasiveness cannot be an object of perception unless it subjects itself to limitations and becomes an effect. But being the primary cause, the substratum and the real substance of all effects, it permeates them all and makes them shine. That light am I.
