Shloka

न साक्षिणं साक्ष्यधर्माः संस्पृशन्ति विलक्षणम् ।
अविकारमुदासीनं गृहधर्माः प्रदीपवत् ।
देहेन्द्रियमनोधर्मा नैवात्मानं स्पृशन्त्यहो ॥ ५०६ ॥

na sākṣiṇaṃ sākṣyadharmāḥ saṃspṛśanti vilakṣaṇam ;
avikāramudāsīnaṃ gṛhadharmāḥ pradīpavat ;
dehendriyamanodharmā naivātmānaṃ spṛśantyaho . 506 .

Anvaya

उष्णं वाuṣṇaṃ vā
Either the heat
शीतं वाśītaṃ vā
or the cold
छायया स्पृष्टम्chāyayā spṛṣṭam
touched by the shadow
सुष्ठुsuṣṭhu
good
दुष्ठु वाduṣṭhu vā
or bad
यत्–किञ्चित्yat–kiñcit
whatever
न स्पृशति एवna spṛśati eva
does not at all affect
पुरुषंpuruṣaṃ
the person
तद्–विलक्षणम्tad–vilakṣaṇam
distinct from that (shadow)

Translation

The properties of body, mind and senses never affect the unchanging and transcendent Atman, just as the properties of a house do not affect the lamp, What a wonder!

Annotation

The word sākṣī refers to the consciousness reflecting in the intellect of a being. It is the observer and all that is known (including the external world and body–mind–complex) is sākṣyam, the ‘observed’. The witness consciousness is untouched by the qualities of the world it illumines.
